Built to Last, Designed for Life

Just like all Custom Steel Buildings buildings, our liveable sheds are engineered tough to handle Australian conditions. We use premium-quality steel and design each structure with strength and longevity in mind.

You can start with one of our popular layouts or work with our experienced design team to create something completely custom.

Why Choose a Shed Home?

  • Customisable layouts

Tailor your space to suit your lifestyle, land size and budget.

  • Flexible design options

Add eaves, internal walls, windows, sliding doors, verandas and more.

  • Built for Australian conditions

Fully engineered to meet or exceed your local wind, snow and terrain ratings. Our buildings are also backed by a 50-year structural warranty.

  • Cost-effective

A smart, streamlined way to build additional living space or a compact home.

Please note: While we supply and may construct the steel structure, items such as site plans, working floor plans, elevations, window schedules, energy efficiency reports, plumbing and electrical plans, and all internal fit-out works (e.g. lining, plumbing, wiring) are managed separately by your chosen trades. We’re happy to work with your builder or designer to help ensure the structure supports your plans.

Liveable Shed FAQs

1. Can I live in a Custom Steel Building shed full-time?

Yes - many of our customers turn their sheds into permanent homes. However, you’ll need to ensure your design complies with local council regulations and meets residential building code requirements in your area.

2. Do you handle the full fit-out (plumbing, electrical, kitchen, etc.)?

Custom Steel Building provides the steel structure and shell. Internal fit-outs are handled by licensed trades of your choice. We’re happy to work with your builder to ensure everything aligns with your plans.

3. Can I design my shed layout from scratch?

Absolutely. We specialise in custom designs. You can bring your own ideas, sketches or plans - or collaborate with our team to create a design that meets your exact needs.

4. Do I need council approval to build a liveable shed?

Yes, most liveable sheds will require approval from your local council. Regulations vary depending on your location, block size, and intended use. Our local experts can help guide you through the process.

5. What’s the difference between a shed home and a traditional house?

Structurally, a liveable shed uses a strong steel frame and cladding, which can be faster and more cost-effective to build. Internally, it can look just like a modern home - the key difference is in how it’s constructed.

6. Are liveable sheds energy-efficient?

Yes - when designed with proper insulation, ventilation and materials, they can be highly energy-efficient. You can also incorporate solar panels, water tanks and other sustainable features into your build.

7. I like the idea of a shed home but I don’t know where to start or what I need to know. Can you share anything that might help?

Absolutely! We have a brochure on the requirements and considerations for Class 1a dwellings that’s a great starting point - see here. You’re also welcome to get in touch with our team if you have any questions - we’re happy to guide you through the process.
